A Chuckle for Christmas

The Gift of the Rocking Chair

I had long wanted to help Dan and Lana get a Rocking Chair for their baby.   I noticed that Lana usually sat in our rocking chair to rock their little girl when they came for a visit, and knew she would love one at home!

Well, one day we had just finished watching my son’s swim meet at Carson Jr. High, and I was headed to my sister Andi’s house in Chandler to return the backdrop and tulle she had loaned us for our reception.  I had 93-year old Grandmother with me in the front seat, and 14-year old Kyler in the back seat of our small Ford Taurus.  (Mark had come to the meet in a separate car.)  As I drove South on Dobson, I looked to my right, and noticed a wood Rocking Chair there in front of an apartment complex, with a sign attached, “Great Condition.  Free.”  What?  Could this be a rocking chair for Dan and Lana?

I had to change lanes, pull over, and turn around to go back to it, and when I got there, another car had also pulled into the driveway before me, and a lady was loading it into her car.  I silently prayed, “If this is supposed to be for Dan and Lana, please help it to happen!”  I walked up to the lady, who was struggling to get the hefty rocking chair into her car, and offered to help her.  She told me she couldn’t get it in, and finally asked me, “Do you want it?”  “Yes,” I told her,” for my daughter- in-law.”  “ You can have it,” was her reply, “and if I still see it here later, I’ll know you couldn’t fit it in your car either.”

Well, I lifted the heavy chair and Kyler helped me try to fit it in.  We tried this and that, and it was just too big!  I already had the trunk full of Grandmother’s walker and the long poles to return to Andi that stuck through the trunk and into the back seat, and the stands, and large rolls of drapery and tulle!!  I called Dan to see if he could come pick it up, but he had just taken apart his car to fix it!  I was about to give up, when Kyler figured out a way to get it in the back seat!  Amazing!!

Then, it hit me.  “Where will you sit??!!”  I asked.  He couldn’t sit on Grandmother’s lap!

Undaunted, tall, lanky Kyler climbed in under the rocking chair, and settled in the floor space, positioning himself over the big hump!  Now, Kyler had already told me how badly he needed to go to the bathroom.  “Shall we stop?” I had asked, to which he’d say, “No, just hurry!”  So I drove out to Andi’s, hoping he could go there.  Once there, he wiggled out of his tight quarters, and helped me carry over and pile up the heavy stands and poles and material to Andi’s garage, as she wasn’t there!  So, Kyler climbed under that rocking chair again, and settled on the floor.

“I sure have to go!” he reminded me!   “Shall we stop somewhere?”  “No, just hurry!”  So, I headed down Dobson then Baseline, toward home, counting the estimated stoplights left.  He was awfully quiet!  “Are you okay?” I’d ask.  “Yea, just hurry!”  (Turns out, he almost fell asleep!)  Well, we made it home with the Rocking Chair for Dan and Lana—thanks to Kyler!!
